Buying Indonesian Batik in the Philippines: Sizing, Shipping and Duty

Buying Indonesian batik from the Philippines is easier than most people expect. Mandalas ships to the Philippines by JNE International, and an order with a goods value of PHP 10,000 or less clears customs with no duty or tax to pay. The two things to get right are the size and the timing.

This guide covers sizing, shipping, how Philippine customs treats a batik parcel, and which pieces suit Filipino occasions. For the story of the cloth itself, start with what batik is.

Get the size right before anything else

Sizing is the most common problem for overseas buyers, so start here.

Indonesian sizing runs roughly one to two sizes smaller than American-labelled clothing, and batik shirts are cut closer to the body than a typical polo or office shirt.

  1. Do not order by letter size. An Indonesian L is not the L on your usual shirts.
  2. Measure a shirt you already own and like. Lay it flat and note chest, shoulder, sleeve and body length.
  3. Compare those numbers with the size chart on the product page.
  4. If you are between sizes, size up. A shirt can be taken in; shoulders cannot be let out.

Our men's batik fit and size guide explains the four measurements that matter, and how to buy a kebaya does the same for women's pieces.

Shipping to the Philippines

Orders to the Philippines travel by JNE International, our courier partner for Philippine orders; more on that partnership in Mandalas x JNE International.

Shipping cost Calculated at checkout from your address and parcel weight
Delivery estimate Shown at checkout before you pay
Free delivery On orders above PHP 3,500 (terms apply, see the site banner)
Tracking On our tracking page

Delivery time runs from dispatch, not from the moment you order, so allow extra days for packing. Around Christmas, Hari Raya and the year-end rush, courier networks in Indonesia run at capacity and transit takes longer.

Customs duty and VAT: the PHP 10,000 rule

Mandalas ships DDU (Delivered Duty Unpaid), so any import charge is yours rather than added at checkout. For most batik orders there is nothing to pay.

  • PHP 10,000 or less: no duty, no tax. Under the de minimis rule, shipments with an FOB value of PHP 10,000 or less are exempt from duties and taxes. It was set by Customs Administrative Order 02-2016 under the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (PortCalls) and is restated in the Bureau of Customs' 2025 order on e-commerce imports (BOC CAO 01-2025).
  • FOB means the value of the goods. The threshold is measured on the goods themselves, not on shipping and insurance.
  • Above PHP 10,000: customs duty and 12% VAT can apply, and the courier collects them before or on delivery.

Do not split a large order to stay under the line. Repeated shipments to the same person meant to avoid the threshold are not allowed, and customs can assess them together. If a family order will run above PHP 10,000, ask us and we will help you plan it. Thresholds are set by government and can change, so check the Bureau of Customs if your order sits near the limit.

What to buy for Filipino occasions

Batik is not a Filipino tradition, but it sits comfortably beside one. A well-cut batik shirt works where a polo barong or a smart patterned shirt would, and a kebaya top reads as dressy without the formality of a full Filipiniana.

Occasion What works Where to look
Office and client meetings Short-sleeve cotton batik in a small, quiet motif Office batik
Weddings and formal dinners Long-sleeve premium batik; kebaya top with a batik skirt Formal batik
Christmas parties and Simbang Gabi Long-sleeve batik in deep red, green or navy Men's batik
Couples and family photos Matching sarimbit sets Sarimbit sets
Gifts A classic motif in a neutral colour Batik gift guide

For the Christmas season, our guide to Simbang Gabi, barong and batik covers what to wear to the dawn masses and the parties around them.

When to order

  • For Christmas: order by late November, earlier for matching family sets that need several sizes in stock at once.
  • For a wedding or event: order early enough to allow one size exchange before the date.
  • For gifts: leave room for a size swap if you are guessing the recipient's size.

Matching sarimbit sets: order these first, since they depend on several sizes being available.

Checking what arrives

Turn the fabric over. On genuine batik the pattern goes through the cloth and shows clearly on the back; on a surface print the reverse is much paler. Real versus printed batik explains more, and the washing guide keeps the colour from the first wash.

Frequently asked questions

Does Mandalas ship to the Philippines?

Yes. Orders go by JNE International to addresses across the Philippines, with tracking. Shipping cost and the delivery estimate are calculated at checkout from your address and the weight of the parcel.

Will I pay customs duty in the Philippines?

Usually not. Shipments with an FOB value of PHP 10,000 or less are exempt from duties and taxes under the de minimis rule. Above that, duty and 12% VAT can apply and the courier collects them on delivery.

Is shipping free?

Orders above PHP 3,500 qualify for free international delivery, subject to the terms shown on the site. Below that, the shipping cost appears at checkout before you pay.

What size should I order?

Indonesian sizes run one to two sizes smaller than American labels. Measure a shirt you own and compare it with the product's size chart rather than ordering your usual size, and choose the larger size if you are in between.

Can I return an order from the Philippines?

Yes, international returns are accepted. Contact customer support before sending anything back and they will explain the steps.

In short

Measure a shirt you own before ordering, check the delivery estimate at checkout, order early for Christmas, and keep the goods under PHP 10,000 to clear without duty or tax. Start with men's batik, women's kebaya and batik, or sarimbit sets.
