Bandung, Bali and Surabaya each have their own relationship with batik, and none of them is Java's batik heartland. Knowing what each city is actually good for saves a lot of wasted afternoons.

Bandung
Bandung is a garment and textile city rather than a batik-producing one. It is strong on manufacturing, factory outlets and modern fashion, so what you generally find is batik made up into contemporary cuts rather than traditional cloth.
Good for: modern batik shirts, casual cuts, and volume at competitive prices. Less good for: traditional tulis and regional cloth, which mostly comes from Central Java anyway.
Bali
Bali has its own textile traditions — endek weaving and Balinese motifs — which are distinct from Javanese batik. Much of what is sold as batik in tourist areas is printed cloth aimed at visitors.
Good for: Balinese endek and local weaving, which are worth buying on their own terms. Be careful with: printed sarongs sold as batik in tourist markets. Check the reverse side before paying — see our guide to real versus printed batik.
A short-sleeve batik shirt — cotton and short sleeve suit Bali and Surabaya heat.
Surabaya
Surabaya is East Java's commercial centre and the natural gateway to Madura, whose bold gentongan batik is genuinely distinctive and produced just across the strait.
Good for: access to Madurese batik, and a wide commercial market. Worth knowing: a real Madura gentongan cloth can represent up to a year of work and is priced accordingly — an unusually cheap one is unlikely to be what it claims.
What to check wherever you buy
Turn the cloth over. Genuine batik shows the pattern on the reverse.
Ask what the fabric is. A specific answer is a good sign; bahan premium is not an answer.
Ask tulis, cap or print. A seller who cannot say should be treated carefully.
Check the shoulder first. It is the one measurement no tailor can fix.
Be sceptical of prices well below market. Especially in tourist areas.

When ordering online makes more sense
Buying in person wins when you want to feel the cloth or you are buying something regional and specific. Ordering online wins in three situations:
You need a specific size. Physical shops carry what they carry; sizes run out first.
You are coordinating a group. Matching sets across a family are far easier to assemble from one catalogue than from several shops.
You want to compare properly. A listing that states fabric, shows the reverse and publishes a size chart gives you more to judge than a market stall does.

A matching sarimbit set — group orders are far easier to assemble from one catalogue.
