Batik Truntum: The Wedding Motif of Lasting Love

Batik Truntum: The Wedding Motif of Lasting Love - Mandalas

Truntum is a classic batik motif from Surakarta (Solo) that stands for love that grows stronger over time. According to the legend, a queen designed it while looking up at a sky full of stars. This guide explains where truntum batik comes from, what the name means, how to recognise the pattern, and how to carry the idea into what you wear.

If you are new to motifs in general, start with our glossary of 12 classic batik patterns. This page goes deeper on one of them.

The legend behind truntum batik

Truntum is credited to Kanjeng Ratu Kencana, queen of Sunan Paku Buwana III of the Surakarta court, who ruled in the second half of the 1700s. In the story as it is told, her husband had turned his attention to a new concubine. The queen looked up at the star-filled night sky and designed a star-like motif. When the king later found her making it, his feelings for her grew again.

It is a legend, and versions vary, so treat it as the story the motif carries rather than a documented history. What matters for the pattern is the idea it was given: a symbol of true, unconditional and lasting love (Wikipedia, Indonesian batik patterns).

What the name and the motif mean

The name is said to come from nuntun, Javanese for "guide". The meaning attached to the motif is the hope that love will grow stronger and more fruitful, along with loyalty and devotion.

An academic reading of the motif (Widodo, Soekarba and Kusharjanto, Sutasoma: Jurnal Sastra Jawa, 2021) lists its elements as tanjung flowers, stars, garuda forms and rhombuses. Those who study Surakarta batik read these as a combined set of symbols rather than a single image, which is why you will see truntum rendered in quite different ways.

What does the name mean? From nuntun, "to guide"

How truntum fits with other ceremonial motifs

Truntum is often mentioned alongside the Sido family of patterns, such as Sidomukti, Sidomulyo and Sido Asih, which are linked to weddings and blessings. Sidomukti, for example, expresses a wish for happiness and prosperity, and for couples a hope for a bright future together. Parang, by contrast, is a restricted royal pattern, and one reading says to avoid it at weddings. Our guide to batik larangan covers the motifs that were once forbidden to wear.

If you are choosing batik for a wedding, check the motif's meaning rather than assuming. A pattern that reads well for the couple may not be what a guest should wear.

Wearing the idea: star and bloom batik today

We do not currently list a dedicated truntum collection, so we will not point you to one. What we can point to is a collection built around a similar idea. The Menemani range, made with Yayasan Habibie & Ainun, includes a "Sky Full of Stars" element that the product page describes as, like the Truntum motif, a love that constantly blooms. It sits alongside anggrek, kantil and gardenia flowers and a butterfly in the same design.

That makes it a natural fit for engagements, anniversaries and weddings. Our guide to the Menemani collection explains the story behind it.

Matching as a couple

A motif about two people suits a matching set. The Menemani "Nilakandi" sarimbit set pairs a men's batik shirt with a women's kutubaru kebaya in navy, coordinated rather than identical. The "Gau" set does the same in a dusty tone, and the "Wilis" set in icy blue. Browse all options in the Sarimbit/Couple Collection.

Indonesian sizing runs one to two sizes smaller than Western sizing, so measure a garment you already own and compare it with the size chart.
